While vacating on my first week in Johannesburg my aunt took me to a concept grocery store called "Food Lover's Market" located in Greenstone. It reminded me of some of the grocery stores here in Canada but was definitely up to high standards for the South African market place. That day I was craving Biltong which for those who don't know it's South African Beef cured and spiced also in some ways similar to Beef Jerkey, but way different and way better.

As I had walked over to the section of Food Lover's that supplied the biltong I noticed the pre-packaged option but the choice of ready-to-cut biltong hanging freely on various racks was the obvious option at hand. The out going store clerk had picked up a piece for me which cost 30 Rand (3 dollars) and next thing I know a brown bag which revealed fresh, wet textured and well flavored Biltong filled to the brim was in my possession. With strong hints of coriander and juicy thick pieces ready for me to chew on, this truly was a match made in heaven.

Depending on where you buy your biltong it can be a bit of a novelty and most real connoisseurs would not be impressed that I purchased a brown bag of goodness from a grocery store however, I personally have nothing bad to say about Food Lover's biltong and their selecion. As long as you purchase it fresh and not pre-ordered and pre-packed then you have nothing to be concerned about. Overall I'd say that Food Lover's Market is a great destination to shop and purchase other products aside from Biltong however I wouldn't make it a destination hot spot solely for Biltong. I would definitely return for the produce and other goodies...

Part sustainable water company, part art project, part philanthropic project, and completely curious. Boxed Water Is Better, is a boxed water company.

Saw this via our friends at Starks Laces and to see a company that really cares for the environment and is doing something effective to make a change is definitely a project that The Tastebuds is eager to support. Give Boxed Water a shot and visit their site here. I'd love to see more and more grocery stores (other the Planet Organic) picking up on this. Remember Boxed Water Is Better For The Earth.

Presentation at The Grillhouse might not be the finest but true indeed the steak makes up for it. Steakhouses are a common thing in Johannesburg and growing up my family and I would frequent them a lot. Although since moving to Canada a lot has changed I'd say in terms of steakhouses things really only got much better.

The Grillhouse is a fine establishment that pride themselves on the greater things in life i.e. Steaks and expensive wines. It's sad that the photos I got were not documented very well but I must add that this was one of the better steaks that I've in eaten in the past little while. Giving off high notes of flavor and tenderness my steel knife cut threw the steak like butter.

Marinated well with flavors flowing non stop through my mouth eating a steak this great only happens once in a while, at least for me because I try to cut down my intake of red meat. Living in Canada I find that the meat here doesn't taste the same as everywhere else so eating a great steak to me is almost like a delicacy. South African meat is top tier and personally I could careless what the rest of the world thinks it's number one in my books.

When and if in South Africa pay visit to The Grillhouse I assure you that disappointment is something you will not find. The vibe is very upper echelon and a fine establishment for family gatherings, significant others, or get togethers with friends.

for a better review on The Grillhouse please read here.

In case you don't know by now I'm a huge fan of Aroma coffee and most of what they have to offer (specially in terms of food). I recently experienced their "Mocha Coffee" which is a long shot of espresso with milk chocolate, pralines topped with steamed milk and froth, sprinkled with cocoa powder. Personally I keep a watch on what I consume but this coffee is extremely hard to resist and definitely something I was taken away from; overwelming I'd say. Think of it this way: well made coffee with chocolate at the bottom so that when you mix the two together it's a touch of that sweet and strong coffee taste mixed together. Genius in my books...

Went to go partake in my usual Sushi Saturday routine only to arrive at Sushi On Bloor and notice a sign on the door that said "CLOSED by order of the medical officer of health"... OUCH! What a bummer I was totally loyal to this establishment and I hope it isn't something too serious or gross. Always viewed Sushi On Bloor as one of the finer establishments to eat Japanese, with really fresh food and great prices but who knows what happened or what will happen. Tonite a lot of the under dog Japanese restaurants gained a lot of business as the Annex was scattered with loyal customers that had to enjoy meals elsewhere i.e. myself and my friends. Stay posted as we try to find out more info on this.

Located in the heart of Melrose Arch (a must stop destination while in Johannesburg, South Africa) situated directly across the street from the ever so famous Moyo (another great restaurant but mainly for tourists), it's safe to say that JB's Corner carries a vibrant element of it's own that is really hard to get over.
Click continue for photos and review.

With both indoor and outdoor seating available; on a beautiful day you'd be stupid not to opt for the outdoor preference of seating. Mist sprays from the roof to cool you down as you sit back and take in the timeless atmosphere. A menu that offers an outrageous variety of food that can make one go slightly senile trying to wind down the final selection of what you'll be eating.

On the present day that I visited JB's Corner for some reason I was feeling some sort of sandwich and as cliche as this is I went for the Chicken and Avo club. That club includes rosemary grilled chicken breast, avo, mozzarella, tomato, crispy brinjal, lettuce and mayo between toasted rye; yes very borderline similar to my meal at Fat Bird however one must remember that to a certain extent I try to monitor what I eat as much as I can.

As I placed my order and listened to the Jazz streaming from the speakers I sat back and watched the birds; both the ones that fly in the sky and ofcourse the female birds sitting down and walking by me. I could slowly get a grasp of why JB's Corner is constantly packed with people at lunch time. Finally my meal arrived and the portion size was perfect and presentation was something I could just look at for hours. Large pieces of grilled rosemary chicken breasts stacked high above avocado, tomato's with moz cheese placed so well that it almost drips off the sandwich. I was way to health concious to order french fries or as they call them "chips" so my meal came accompanied by a regular house style salad with a balsamic vinegar. A tender mouthful of flavor was at my presence and truthfully a meal that I would never think of disregarding, that's right if or when I return to Joberg easy to say JB's will be a priority.
