The Tastebuds: January 2008

Trip to Munch-réal Part Deux: Galiano's

1/30/08

On our first night, we were taken to this fancy Italian restaurant in Old Montréal called Galianos. The atmosphere was very old-fashioned Italian with a modern touch. So that means an impressive wine rack by the entrance, brick walls, dimly lit tables and trendy deco. So I walk in rocking an Arc'teryx shell and Jordan Vs like they never see this clientele. I expected some opera or traditional Italian music but I could've sworn I heard some Rihanna through the speakers. All in all it was an amazing meal. Definitely one of the highlights of our food quest.

Anyway, on to the eating part of the story:

One of the best Italian breads I've consumed.

Fried Zucchini = Crack

Manicotti on Mushroom & Rose sauce.

Keeping tradition alive (word to Avi Gold) Gnocchi on Mushroom and Rose sauce.

Hello Hazel enjoying the Manicotti.

"That will be $20,000 for the coffee maker sir"

1/29/08

WTF The Japanese are always making us look bad! They did it again with this halogen powered coffee maker bar, only found at some cafe in San Fran. Looks like something out of Pee Wee's playhouse (pause). And top it all off, its estimated value is around $20 grand! WTF?!? I don't even drink coffee but I want this because I have a feeling it brews the richest and tastiest cup of coffee without any beans; just existing matter like protons and neutrons in the air. Imagine that. via Luxist

coffee maker or futuristic drug paraphernalia? hmmmmmm...

you know those veteran coffee connoisseurs that drink that shit everyday and have grown desensitized to the taste that they now use their noses to consume... yep he's one of them

Nourishing The Body Whole...

If you've never heard of Odwalla then let Tastebuds fill you in. Born almost more then 25 years ago and started by 3 friends and a so called "box of oranges" rumour has it Odwalla also stemmed from the inspiration to live well. We cant forget the musical piece entitled "Odwalla" from an Art Ensemble in Chicago that played a major role in the company due to the fact that in the poem Odwalla was a leader who guided “the people of the sun” out of the “gray haze”. Similar to how the delicious products help humans break free from the dull mass of over-processed foods that is so prevalent today. With a variety of flavors to pick and choose and a new line of nutritious nutri grain bars eating healthy probably never taste so good. Co-sign!! Oh and forgot to mention I'm personally really interested in trying "Poma Grand"...

My Trip to Munch-réal

1/28/08

This weekend me and my gf Hazel (check out what her life's like on her blog) took a little road trip to Montréal or rather, Munch réal. Though it was brief, our stay was pretty amazing despite the frigid weather. My gf's cousin (thanks so much for the hospitality!) put us on some food spots and best believe I documented it all.

So for the next few posts, The Tastebuds will be presenting a series dedicated to our food quest in Montréal. And without further aideu...

My gf's cousin Fatima took us to a spot on St. Denis called Mont Royal where apparently, they serve the best poutine ever. for those that know me, I am a FIEND for poutine. Not being born in Canada and having to be accustomed to the Canadian culture at a young age to blend in meant playing hockey, eating bagels and eating poutine. I did all three and only stuck with the latter.

Mont Royal was no different from any greasy spoon joint and had a very straight forward menu. So I ordered the smoked meat poutine and I would have to say that it ranked #2 on my top 3 list of best poutines. (#1 being a local spot at the old hood). It was simply spectacular; words cannot express how good the poutine was so I hope this photo helps. I won't lie I couldn't finish it but if my stomach was a bit emptier beforehand, I would've devoured that plate with ease.

Smoked Meat Poutine

Hot Dog, Green Peppers & Onions Poutine.

The other variation we tried was the mont royal signiature poutine which included green peppers, mushrooms and slices of hot dogs. Very yummy as well.

If you're visiting Montreal and happen to be in this section of the Plateau area and love poutine as much as I do then pay Mont Royal a visit. Just make sure you're with someone that has certified First-Aid training just in case you have a triple bypass. Don't say that I didn't warn you.

Marmighty...

1/27/08

Popular with a lot of Brits, Kiwi's and Ozzy's (England, New Zealand, Australia) this spread is a morning favorite for most people hailing from these territories. Most Vegans or Vegetarians are pretty phsyced off Marmite! If you still don't know what Marmite is it's actually a sticky, dark brown paste with a very distinctive strong taste. Extremely salty references say this taste can be compared to Soy sauce. Marmite believes to be the underdog on top due to there slogan "Love it or Hate it" because some either like or dislike me personally not a big fan but I remember my grandfather going nuts over Marmite. Usually eaten on toast this spread is generally enjoyed in the am hours of the day. Some enjoy this so much that they've gone on to create fan sites. If you get a chance try and if you don't enjoy it do not blame it on me.

Teriyaki Mc Burger

1/23/08

A close friend of mine by the name of Jun Ogawa contacted me and told me he wanted to submit something for "the tastebuds", I said "sure no problem". Any how a few days later he sends me a message telling me he has some photos for me and low and behold straight from Japan we present to you the Teriyaki Mc Burger. According to Jun in Japan this is available at every Mc Donalds and is on the regular menu much like a Big Mac would be in North America. Rumour has it the burger is pretty sweet and not beef it's apparently pork (meaning I wouldn't be able to eat it.. damn) however don't let the pork throw you off the concept is one of a kind and well suitable for Japan. Next time your out in Tokyo or cruising through Harajuku be sure to pick of a Teriyaki Mc Burger for the ride.

get yourself some teriyaki!

bite into that..Teriyaki is mouth watering!! Jun's mouth x Teriyaki collabo..yeahhhh

Scartown's Finest: T-Bones

1/22/08

If you are a resident of Scarborough (side note: best place ever in the GTA) then you know about T-Bones. If you don't then you're a fool. T-Bones is a staple in ScarTown; its won local awards repeatedly and toronto rap group IRS even filmed a scene here in one of their music videos. In my 4 years in Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary (5 minutes away from the restaurant) I have eaten countless steak and eggs lunches and skipped many periods for their poutine. It is pretty much the best for greasy grilled food. Not to mention that it's open 24 hours. Therefore, I brought along the Mayor of Thornhill Avi Gold for a late night grubfest after a long day's work.

He opted for the Steak Burger w/ Fries and Gravy.

I got real sicko with it and got the 8 oz Rib-Eye w/ Mushrooms, Salad, Fries and Gravy at 12AM!

Investo in an Espresso..

One thing I always tried to do in life was imitate the mafia lifestyle. After a big Italian meal I would order a mini cappuccino espresso style because I had identity problems and wanted to look cool. Okay I'm totally joking however I found mini espresso's to be some what "cool" and enjoyable. Never been that into the coffee thing although I know most people who live in Canada are all about it. Recently paid my friend H. Sacks a visit and he told me all about his recent investment an Espresso machine. It was also kinda cool to see how this machine functions and the variety of capsules you can purchase to go along with your machine. Mr. Sacks told me about how the espresso accessories and capsules were displayed in France and it sounded as if it was on a next level. If your a big entertainer I'd say purchase one of these to please your guests, once they see colors and options they have no option of refusal.

Chocolate Bark..

1/20/08

In this picture above you see myself and little Demi, if you didn't know little Demi is basically like my little sister. Ease back fellas she's only 16!!! Haha any how she told me that she is the creator of a treat called "Chocolate Bark". Unfortunately she wouldn't reveal the recipe however I got some great photos and taste descriptions for all you to witness.
Chocolate Bark is a a mixture of pretzels, nuts and chocolate all combined to give you both the pleasure of sweet and salt mixed together. It's definitely a unique taste brought together that will keep you wanting to snack for hours. If you have allergy problems I would not recommend this, however if you enjoy trying new things and have a sweet tooth then this is all you.Birds eye view shot of these sweet snack. If you look closely you can really see definition in the almond nuts (pause) and have a better idea of what ingredients would be required. Each piece is uniquely made... Good job lil' Demi

Cherry Bowl...

For most guys theirs nothing better then popping a cherry!!! (Okay that was gross I'll start over) Friday evening I went to a close family friends place for dinner and the food was top notch. For desert we had the usual ice creams, cakes , etc.. but we were also fortunate enough to have a bowl of Cherry's! Really enjoyed the texture and natural sweet provided from this tantalising fruit. At times I seem to think Cherry's can be underrated but then I realize how wrong I am i.e. Cherry Coke etc..
Above view, as you can see Elinor Sacks also threw in some raspberry's..
Close up view of these tasty treats.
Always good after a good diner... and may I recommend cherry juice if you get a chance.

Pizza...Japanese Style?

Just saw this on another food blog. The Pizzeria, a japanese creation that mimics the idea of traditional Italian brick oven cooked pizza. It is a small (by the looks of it in the photos) ceramic dome that shells over the pizza and it sits over your stovetop. The design is great too, as it mimics a brick oven. Damn, those Japanese did it again...

Those days are gone and since then, he has ventured to the West Coast and now offers to take us along on his mission to find/eat good food as cheaply as possible.

Handpresso

1/16/08
For you caffeine freaks, Handpresso is a gadget made by the french that enables you to make Espresso anywhere by placing the espresso into the gadget and pumping this crack-pipe looking device until there's enough pressure and then pouring hot water into the see-thru glass reservoir. When the pressure is released, the pumped espresso shoots through the pipe and blends with the hot water and then pours out of a spout into your cup. I used to work at a cafe and made endless amounts of fancy caffeine beverages using the big steamers/espresso makers u find at a Starbucks or any cafe and I tell you, this Handpresso is really impressive. (but i don't drink coffee)

There's a funny commerical that accompanies the Handpresso. Please watch it.

Authentic Gyros From Messini

1/15/08
A few weeks back when Tastebuds first started a young girl by the name of Angelina Milika Jenkins contacted me. She wanted to let me know that she was a huge fan of what were doing over here and wanted to contribute any which way possible. Fast forward a few weeks and here we have a contributing article on her favorite Greek restaurant in Toronto; Messini. Enjoy!
In almost every city I have ever traveled to, there has always been a souvlaki or pita spot that claims its authenticity in Greek cuisine. And although they all serve equally satisfying meals, I have never tasted such perfection as I have at Toronto’s own Messini Authentic Gyros. Situated in the heart of Danforth, people can experience the city’s greatest tasting Gyro while dining in a comfortable, well-designed atmosphere.

What is a Gyro one might ask?? Gyros are a Greek pita sandwich generally made with chicken or pork. The pita is almost always stuffed with meat, tomatoes, onions and tzatziki sauce. In Greece, Gyros are usually made as a fast food, as hamburgers are in the Western world.

At Messini Authentic Gyros the Gyro meal comes with your choice of fries or authentic Greek salad and a drink. All of the ingredients found in a gyro at Messini’s are fresh, the meat is not processed and frozen, and the pitas are made fresh by Messini’s staff daily. If Gyro’s aren’t your steeze, they also serve mouth watering Pita’s that are stuffed with your choice of grilled chicken, pork or vegetables topped with onions, tomatoes, Tzatziki and freshly cut French fries.

Yeah, there are french fries IN the Pita. Sooo much less work when you’re a craving fat kid like me.

Not only do they serve their self-proclaimed Gyros and Pita’s, but their menu also boasts such items as Grilled or Deep Fried Calamari, Tirokrketes (deep fried cheese balls), Spanakopita (flaky greeky spinach pie) and if you’re brave enough, Grilled Octopus.

On top of it all, Messini Authentic Gyros is one of the few restaurants that caters to a younger crowd, especially with their 5 A.M. closing time on Friday and Saturday nights. My only advice is to reach this spot sooner rather than later.

Joe Superette Rice Balls..

Tastebuds present a special guest contributor today by the name of Ulysses Pizarro. He is a Brooklyn native who has lived in New York his whole life and recently took the time out of his schedule to review some heritage in his neighborhood. Enjoy!

If you visit Brooklyn or plan on visiting Brooklyn Joe's Superette is the place to get an authentic taste for Brooklyn food as well as culture. Founded in 1960 Joe's has been serving Carrol Gardens with the infamous rice ball.

I know your saying what so special about a rice ball? These are no ordinary rices balls. They are a true delicacy and come in three different varieties. The prosciutto ball (my personal favorite), the rice and meat ball and for the vegans and vegetarians just rice and cheese. Each one will run you 50 cents and that's not the rapper that's the price which is more then fair for the quality of the food. The rice balls are deep fried to really give it that extra taste that baking simply will not. The man behind the counter has been molding these delicious treats since 1975 and the service is top notch. However I recommend waiting till around 2pm to miss the lunch crowd or you will wait at least a half hour.

A small price to pay but i like to get mine as soon as possible. I've been eating at Joe's for over 10 years and have never been disappointed. Joe's Superette has become a staple to the neighborhood as well as a kept secret. Thank you Joe for keeping Brooklyn fed with the best rice balls money can buy.

Mayo With Kick..

Nandos which is one of my favorite restaurants EVER, recently came out with a new line of products. Those products include "Peri Peri" Mayonnaise which is basically Pre-made Mayo with some spice/kick to it. This is a great venture and idea on there part but unfortunately it's not available in North America... that's right bitches.. IMPORT ha ha ha!! I may be wrong but Perinaise comes in three different styles which are Original, Medium and Hot. If you can find it then pick it up definitely a great alternative for sandwiches and other goods. You might be able to find generic mayonnaise that is spicy but chances are it's not like Nandos. Stand out ingredient in Perinaise "African Birds Eye Pepper".

What's on your Bread?

1/10/08

One of my favourite spreads on Pan De Sal (salted Filipino bread; more on that later) has got to be Reno Liver Spread. I've read on forums that the kind you get here in North America isn't as good as the Philippine joints so therefore I'm trying to get a hold of them and will try to export a boatload for the years to come. I haven't had this in a while and it just popped up in my mind all of a sudden so I decided to "blawwwggg" it. All I can remember was that it tasted best with medium toasted bread.

A "Terra Chips" On My Shoulder...

Usually found near the organics section of a grocery store along side other “specialty” potato chips; let’s just say that if you don’t know about Terra chips then you’re missing out on a best kept secret.

Originally founded in 1990 these delightful snacks have coined an advantage against other potato chips due to the variety they offer. As opposed to having your every day run of the mill they offer different kinds of chips which are sometimes described as “exotic vegetables”. Terra also allow you options with there gourmet snacks by providing you something most other companies don’t which is like I mentioned choice. They also have unsalted chips so now you don’t have to feel half as bad about eating something that’s usually regarded as unhealthy, although not all chips are unsalted if you do get the unsalted Terra’s then your cutting out close to 90% worth of sodium.

With 11 different bags to choose from I’d say if you can try them all really well worth it. I first got familiar with Terra chips via my mom because she used the Terra “sticks” in a salad (thanks mom). Check out the Terra website here as you can learn more about these delightful snacks, shapes of the chips and more to come from this great company. They even have a bag of chips called “Pot pourri” how creative hee hee hee hee!!!

Lunch @ Sandwich Box

1/8/08
I ate at Sandwich Box yesterday. I was put on it almost two years ago during the summer while working downtown. I used to make the lunchruns for everybody and I would walk down to the one on Queen in that little indoor marketplace joint where Stan's Burgers and Amato's Pizza is. From the first time I ate @ Sandwich Box, I almost always got the same thing. I like the Richmond St. location because its an actual restaurant location, they have seating and the interior deco is very modern and attracts the financial district zombie yuppies.

My sandwich = Grilled chicken breast on Rosemary Foccacia bread with Sun-dried Tomato paste, protobello mushrooms and Provolone cheese.

I've grown to dislike minimalist, "clean and simple" design. I think its gotten a little out of hand and became a "cop out" or an easy way into making ANYTHING look "good" and credible. But I'm not entirely mad at the colour palette + typeface + type treatment used for their indentity.

Saffron From San Gimgnano..

1/7/08

Some claim that the best Saffron comes from Tuscany. Although most of its export come from Iran (The worlds largest producers of Saffron), Spain and of course Italy are also responsible. San Gimignano’s is also known for producing some great Saffron and as a tourist destination it draws in about 3.5 million tourists each year. It’s all thanks to 13 Medieval Towers, gorgeous Palazzo Del Podesto and famous white wine from Vernaccia. Historically San Gimignano’s economy and incredible architecture legacy was tied into Saffron. In the 17th century the spice disappeared from Tuscany and Navelli (near L’Aquila which is the capitol city of Abruzzo) and took its place as the centre of Italian Saffron cultivation. Recently San Gimignano has re-discovered it’s glorious past as the centre of the Saffron trade which granted it reassurance.

In 2005 the European Union awarded San Gimgnano’s Saffron a prestigious trademark which is the Protection Designation of Origin (DOP) which is almost like a seal of authenticity that you’ll find on many of Italy’s best wines. In the 15th century it was considered to be the best in the world and exported all over the globe from Holland all the way to Alexandria. At that time Saffron’s uses extended far beyond the gastronomic. Thanks to the incredible versatility of Saffron it was used in medicine and perfumery, as dye for textiles and as color pigment by some of Florence and Siena’s greatest painters.

Saffron was literally worth its weight in gold and was often used as a form of payment; to this day it remains to be the world most expensive spice. Some might ask “what’s so exceptional about this particular Saffron” or why does the best Saffron come from San Gimignano’s? It’s a matter of soil, climate and skill of cultivators. In San Gimignano the soil is sand and the summers are dry, the crocus lives up to full potential.

If you wish to order Saffron directly from San Gimgnano you can contact Laurent Simonetti of Il Casolare di Remignoli, San Giminiano. He ships his Saffron to the us. To order call: 011-39-348-6615984 or email him at info@remignoli.com

"I'm the Tyrannosaurus Rex of the Pyrex"

1/6/08

Pyrex was introduced by the Corning Inc. in 1915 as thermal shock resistant glass, later used as kitchenware. Now they are made with soda-lime glass and are not to be used over flames, on stove tops, under broiler, or in a toaster oven but the Euro versions are still made with OG fashion and can withstand the heat.

Now it's a familiar face in every cook's kitchen and i mean EVERY cook. Including those in your local traphouse. Yes, Pyrex has gained quite a bit of notoriety thanks to the likes of T.I., Young Jeezy and The Clipse preaching its significance to their "work".

WTF High-End Kitchen Knives

1/5/08

These Kramer joints take 16 hours to make and are hand-crafted by Master Bladesmith Bob Kramer. The "Damascus" or pattern welded steel is a process he uses to combine three different types of steel to achieve mechanical properties and a desired aesthetic. Word is that he repeats the process until the blade has 300 layers. Imagine how strong that blade is? The handles are made from Sonoran Desert ironwood and the ill pattern on the blades are reminiscent of ancient Persian swords. The standard price on these knives are about $1000 a piece and there's a one or two year waiting list.
